The DOL has announced the next director of the OFCCP

September 8, 2009 Patricia Shiu starts the next chapter of OFCCP directors. Shiu is currently the vice president of programs at the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco's Employment Law Center (LAS-ELC), where she has dedicated the last 25 years to uncovering employment discrimination in the areas of race, gender, disability and sexual orientation. In addition to being vice president of LAS-ELC, Shiu is the director of the Legal Aid Society's Work and Family Project where she advocated the passage of California's Family Rights Act and its regulations. Shiu also serves on the board of directors of The Employment Rights Advocacy Institute for Law and Policy, a non-profit organization created by National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA), whose mission is to advocate for employee rights by advancing equality and justice in the American workplace. Shiu received her law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law.

While no one is certain what changes Patricia Shiu will bring to the OFCCP, employers should take special note of her appointment as the new director. Her career dedication to uncovering and eliminating employment discrimination based on race, gender and disability falls right in line with the OFCCP regulations. If you take Shiu's focus on employment discrimination and couple it with the business execution model that Charles James established, it could create the perfect combination for the OFCCP to exceed their record number of $67 million in make-whole remedy in 2008.
